Distribution of compound-nucleus shapes and its influence on evaporation
The tail of the equilibrium distribution of compound-nucleus shapes is shown to extend out to very deformed shapes even for a moderate excitation energy of 100 MeV. The standard Hauser-Feshbach formalism is extended to predict the decay of a deformed compound nucleus as a function of spin, spin projection, and excitation energy. The inclusion of the equilibrium distributions of shapes is found ...
متن کاملDirect measurement of ion evaporation kinetics from electrified liquid surfaces
When concentrated solutions of NaI in formamide with electrical conductivities K larger than 1.1 S/m are electrosprayed from a Taylor cone-jet in a vacuum, ions are evaporated at substantial rates from the surface of the meniscus and the drops. This constitutes a new source of ions and nanoparticles, where the relative importance of these two contributions is adjustable. The currents of ions ar...
متن کاملWater Evaporation From Atmospheric Aerosols
With the recent discovery of the ubiquity of organic material in tropospheric aerosols, it has been postulated that the rates of water evaporation and condensation into the aerosols could be affected by thin surfactant films, which could ultimately affect cloud formation. Nathanson et al. have begun to study the effect of water evaporation from sulfuric acid solutions through the short-chain su...
متن کاملInfluence of Altitude Atmospheric Pressure on Octane Requirement (RESEARCH NOTE).
The normal specifications of motor gasolines as well as their combustion characteristics in internal combustion engines are reviewed in this paper. The effective factors influencing the fuel performance, such as the molecular structure of the fuel constituents, the operating conditions and the atmospheric pressure and temperature are also discussed. A relationship between the optimum octane num...
متن کاملRaman Spectra of a PMMA Microstructured Optical Fibre and Direct Measurement of Its Gain Coefficient
A polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF) is fabricated and characterized. Using the cut-back technique the fiber loss is measured which is higher than the step-index silica fibers. Through a novel experimental scheme, the backward Stokes spectrum of the fabricated mPOF is recorded over a range exceeding 3000 cm‑1 during the cut-back method and compared ...
